家道中落，湯姆（詹姆斯·馬歇爾 James Marshall 飾）無奈之下跟隨父親搬到了貧民窟，在這裏，殘酷的生活等待著他。一名拳擊經紀人看上了體格健壯的湯姆並將他介紹給了拳擊教練諾亞（奧西·戴維斯 Ossie Davis 飾），沒過多久，經驗豐富的諾亞就將湯姆訓練成為了一名職業拳擊手。 首戰告捷的諾亞吸引了拳擊俱樂部老板何恩的注意，他買下了湯姆父親所欠下的全部債務，就這樣，湯姆成為了何恩賺錢的工具。在拳擊場上，湯姆結識了誌同道合的好友林肯（小庫珀·古丁 Cuba Gooding Jr. 飾），兩人飾生活中的好夥伴，同時也是賽場上的競爭對手。隨著時間的推移，湯姆逐漸看清了何恩貪婪而又殘忍的真麵目，與此同時，湯姆得知，他的下一個對手，竟然正是林肯。
